One thing I love about digital tools is how easy they make processes.
I’ll admit it, I’m a process nerd, and a proud one. Don’t get me wrong, I hate stale, inefficient and bureaucratic processes as much as the next one. But a well-oiled, efficient process? It makes my heart sing with joy.
Ideally, processes start simple. My favourite tools for efficient operations are:
- Forms
- Checklists
- Step-by-step guides
They take but minutes to modify as the organization evolves and learns, but reap productivity rewards from day one.
Digital tools allow us to create smarter processes, both simple and complex. An online form on your website is quick to create and modify. A page on an intranet with checklist and steps is always up-to-date.
As the process matures smarter workflows can be created. The form can easily share data with another system. The checklist can offer ties with related systems for even quicker workflows.
Starting simple with cheap and off-the-shelf tools that are already in place (forms, documents, intranets) allows you to tweak the process in the beginning. When it is mature, building tighter integration allows you to reap the full rewards.
That’s what I love most about digital tools and their possibilities for any organization. It’s not all or nothing. It’s about the right level at the right time.
